Our essence was fire and cold... and movement, movement!

Is there any reason to assume the universe had a beginning? The human experience has a beginning, but humans are mere physical consequences. Is the universe really eternal? Thoughts, anyone?
Of course, but I guess my thought was: is that enough justification? It's a strong inductive argument, but just because everything else seems to be a physical consequence, it is not necessarily the case that the universe, existence itself, is a physical consequence.
Furthermore, I'm not so sure it CAN be a physical consequence. If, by definition, everything physical necessarily exists within the universe, the universe could not have been physically caused, because its cause must exist before it and, therefore, before the (our) physical world.
We could say that our universe was caused or resulted from another universe (certain branches of multiverse theory cover this), but that brings us to the same question. This is why, though it seems like there is reason to suspect a beginning, there may not be. I'm not so convinced it even makes sense.

What is not a mere physical consequence? If the universe is, then it had to start somewhere.

Well said. I agree.
